Call for Papers:\u00a0Eudora Welty Review<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Spring 2027<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The\u00a0Eudora Welty Review<\/i>\u00a0invites scholarly essays (6,500 to 10,000 words) and notes of general interest to Welty studies (1,500 to 3,500 words) for the Spring 2027 issue. We also welcome submissions of \u201cprovocations,\u201d original,\u00a0non-refereed essays (5000-6000 words max)\u00a0that are argumentative in nature but do not have the development of a full-length refereed scholarly article. They take a more specific focus,\u00a0propose an innovative\u00a0view\u00a0on a subject, and generally \u201cprovoke\u201d new ways of seeing and engaging with Welty\u2019s work. Open call essays, notes, and provocations should be sent to\u00a0EWR<\/i>\u00a0co-editor Sarah Ford at\u00a0sarah_ford@baylor.edu<\/a>\u00a0by September 1, 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2027\u00a0EWR<\/i>\u00a0will also feature a special cluster dedicated to\u00a0\u201cWelty\u2019s Futures.\u201d\u00a0<\/b>Building on the 2025 International Eudora Welty Society Conference, \u201c\u2018That\u2019s for the Future to Say\u2019: Eudora Welty in the 21st\u00a0Century,\u201d we\u00a0seek essays, notes, and provocations that explore the theme of Welty\u2019s futures: both the future\u00a0in<\/i>\u00a0Welty's works and\u00a0the future\u00a0of<\/i>\u00a0her works at a time when, for better and for worse, emerging technologies have already changed and will continue to change the ways readers engage with literary texts and visual media alike. How do Welty\u2019s twentieth-century writings and photographs speak to twenty-first-century readers, long after the worlds they depict have largely faded from view? How was she, and how might she still be, ahead of her time? How can scholars of today help ensure that her works remain accessible to readers of tomorrow? Possible topics include, but are not limited to, the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0New approaches to Welty\u2019s fiction, nonfiction, and photographs<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Reconsiderations of Welty\u2019s place within such time-honored discursive formations as modernism or the gothic<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Readings of Welty\u2019s life and\/or work informed by new theoretical lenses or archival discoveries<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Futurity and\/or constructions of the future in Welty\u2019s fiction<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Future-facing aspects of Welty\u2019s techniques as a writer and photographer for twenty-first-century audiences<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Comedy in Welty and how her humor comes across to twenty-first-century readers<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Authors\/works that influenced or anticipated Welty<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Welty\u2019s afterlives\u2014her influence on later writers or ways that later writers have paid homage to Welty or her work<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Overlooked works in Welty\u2019s oeuvre, or overlooked characters in her stories<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Digital Humanities approaches to Welty<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Welty and social media<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0New scholarly editions of Welty\u2019s writings, correspondence, photographs, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n
