Pritchett as \u201cfriends and travelers and readers.\u201d Melissa will be visiting the Mississippi Department of Archives and History to examine Pritchett\u2019s letters to Welty, any photographs of the authors together, and any writings where Welty mentions Pritchett. The\u00a0Eudora Welty Review<\/em>\u00a0is proud to announce that Pei-Wen Clio Kao is the winner of the 2024\u00a0Eudora Welty Review<\/em>\u00a0Grant. Pei-Wen will be researching in the Mississippi Department of Archives & History and the J.D. Williams Library at the University of Mississippi. Her project is a comparative study of William Faulkner and Eudora Welty, examining cityscapes and urban scenarios, with a focus on New Orleans. We look forward to hearing the results of Pei-Wen\u2019s research project.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The Eudora Welty Review<\/em> is pleased to announce that two research grants have been awarded for 2023 to Elizabeth Crews of Blue Mountain Christian University and Harriet Pollack of College of Charleston.<\/p>\n

Elizabeth Crews will be working on \u201cEudora Welty and Mary Louise Aswell\u201d by exploring the collection of correspondence between Welty and Aswell housed at Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Crews writes that her \u201cgoal is to create a narrative of the friendship of Welty and Aswell and to look at the role the friendship played in the writings of both women. Welty and Aswell\u2019s friendship began when Aswell was the editor of Harper\u2019s Bazaar<\/em>, and she often considered and accepted \u00a0Welty\u2019s stories for publication. However, as the years progressed, Aswell moved away from editing and began writing herself. In many ways, Welty served as an encourager and sounding board for Aswell\u2019s writing ideas and explorations, and Aswell continued to be a trusted reader for Welty throughout their friendship.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harriet Pollack will be working on \u201cEudora Welty Leaves Home: Letters Between Mother and Daughter.\u201d She will explore the long-sealed Welty Family Papers, also housed at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. When the collection first opened in April, Pollack spent a few days reading the correspondence between Chestina Andrews and Christian Welty during their courtship, letters and diaries from extended family, and Eudora\u2019s own notes on this material. She will use the grant to return to MDAH, in her words, \u201cto locate the two sides of the correspondence between mother and daughter, written as Eudora first departed from her home and family at the very young age of 16 to attend \u2018The W\u2019 (now Mississippi University for Women), then again as she attended University of Wisconsin at 18, and finally as she advanced to Columbia University School of Business and New York City when 21.\u201d<\/p>\n

Results of these research projects will be published in the 2024 Eudora Welty Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The Eudora Welty Review<\/em> awards research grants annually of up to $2000 to scholars interested in conducting research on Eudora Welty, her writings, photographs, travels, cultural milieu, friends, or publishers at any archive. Applicants may be graduate students, independent scholars, college or university faculty at any level. Deadline for the 2024 grants is December 31, 2023. Eudora Welty Digital Archives Launches Online<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) is pleased to announce that\u00a0The Eudora Welty Digital Archives<\/a>\u00a0is now available to the public on the MDAH website. This digitization project was funded by a grant from the\u00a0National Endowment for the Humanities<\/a>\u00a0with a matching contribution from the\u00a0Eudora Welty Foundation<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Eudora Welty Digital Archives represents only a sample of Welty-related material housed at MDAH and features selections of correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, and other media related to Eudora Welty (1909-2001), master of the short story and one of America's greatest authors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"MDAH is grateful to the National Endowment for the Humanities for their generous grant which allowed for the construction of the world's most extensive digital archive of Eudora Welty materials,\" said Katie Blount, director of MDAH. \"We are excited to share this incredible resource with researchers and fans of Eudora Welty.\"<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Eudora Welty had a long relationship with the MDAH, making her first donation of manuscripts, papers, and photographs in 1957, and continuing to donate throughout her life. In addition to documents, the collection includes the house where Welty lived most of her life and wrote her greatest works, her furniture, art, and books, and the garden in which she worked alongside her mother. The complete collection is accessible at the MDAH.<\/span><\/p>\n

MDAH Announces the Opening of the Welty Family Letters: In honor of Eudora Welty\u2019s 113th birthday on April 13, a previously restricted series of Welty\u2019s family papers is now open to the public. \u201cThe letters in this series begin with the courtship letters of my grandparents,\u201d said Welty\u2019s niece Mary Alice White. \u201cAlso included are personal papers of the family, Eudora's correspondence with family members, and papers and letters from my father, uncles, and other family members. Because these letters were not technically the property of Eudora\u2014they belong to the letter writer\u2014I think Eudora wanted them sealed to respect the privacy of those still living.\u201d The\u00a0Eudora Welty Collection, Series 45: Welty Family Papers<\/em>\u00a0was restricted to the public, in accordance with Welty\u2019s will, for twenty years after her death. \u201cThis rich gathering of family correspondence swells what was already a most remarkable resource,\u201d said Welty scholar and affiliate professor at the College of Charleston Harriet Pollack. \u201cIn these new materials, we grow close to Welty\u2019s parents; her siblings and their families; her grandmother and great grandmother and their children. Through their intimate and everyday interactions with one another, we also come to know so much more about the woman and the writer, Eudora Welty. Astonishingly, a very private woman has unpredictably made generations of personal history available to those touched by her art, inviting us to better understand and to more fully engage the elusive woman behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Eudora Welty Collection was established in 1957, when the internationally acclaimed author donated a portion of her papers\u2014manuscripts, photographs, and correspondence\u2014to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. The entire Welty Collection consists of\u00a0 drafts, revised copies, and printer's versions of Welty's works, including stories, books, essays, reviews, lectures, speeches, and drama. The collection also contains incoming and outgoing correspondence of Welty, negatives and photographs taken by Welty and her father, and memorabilia. Annette Trefzer has published Exposing Mississippi: Eudora Welty's Photographic Reflections<\/em> with the University Press of Mississippi:<\/p>\n

Internationally known as a writer, Eudora Welty has as well been spotlighted as a talented photographer. The prevalent idea remains that Welty simply took snapshots before she found her true calling as a renowned fiction writer. But who was Welty as a photographer? What did she see? How and why did she photograph? And what did Welty know about modern photography? In\u00a0Exposing Mississippi: Eudora Welty's Photographic Reflections<\/i>, Annette Trefzer elucidates Welty\u2019s photographic vision and answers these questions by exploring her photographic archive and writings on photography.<\/p>\n

The photographs Welty took in the 1930s and \u201940s frame her visual response to the cultural landscapes of the segregated South during the Depression. The photobook\u00a0One Time, One Place<\/i>, which was selected, curated, and shaped into a visual narrative by Welty herself, serves as a starting point and guide for the chapters on her spatial hermeneutic. The book is divided into sections by locations and offers how the framing of these areas reveals Welty\u2019s radical commentary of the spaces her camera captured. There are over eighty images in\u00a0Exposing Mississippi<\/i>, including some never-before-seen archival photographs, and sections of the book draw on over three hundred more. The chapters on institutional, leisure, and memorial landscapes address how Welty\u2019s photographs contribute to, reflect on, and intervene in customary visual constructions of the Depression-era South. 2020 Eudora Welty Fellow Awarded<\/strong><\/p>\n

Margaret Pless, a doctoral student at the University of Mississippi, has been named the 2020 Eudora Welty Fellow. Pless will use archival holdings at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) to research how Eudora Welty constructed her identity in her writing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to understand how craft, for Welty, intersected with actual memory,\u201d said Pless. \u201cI am especially interested in using the archives to explore Welty's relationship with her mother, a relationship characterized in One Writer's Beginnings by secrecy. I want to understand how such secrecy shapes an understanding of self, especially in a figure as public as a writer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Established by MDAH and the Eudora Welty Foundation, the fellowship seeks to encourage and support research of the Eudora Welty Collection by graduate students.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe're grateful to the Foundation for their continuing support and excited that Margaret Pless will make extensive use of the Welty Collection this summer,\u201d said David Pilcher, director of the MDAH Archives and Record Services Division.<\/p>\n

After receiving her BA in English and history from Vanderbilt University, Pless completed her MA in English at the University of Mississippi where she is currently working towards her PhD. Pless will use the $2,000 fellowship to cover travel, housing, and other expenses incurred while doing primary research at the William F. Winter Archives and History Building in Jackson.<\/p>\n

The University Press of Mississippi has a new series, Critical Perspectives on Eudora Welty<\/em>, edited by Harriet Pollack. The series seeks to celebrate and preserve the legacy of Eudora Welty through scholarship and to explore new issues in Welty studies. These fresh approaches will reinforce the continued relevancy of Welty's work to such contemporary topics as popular culture; social justice; and women's, gender, and sexuality studies. The series, composed of both monographs and edited collections, will serve as a worthy commemoration to and celebration of one of the South's greatest treasures. The inaugural volume in the series,\u00a0New Essays on Eudora Welty, Class, and Race<\/em>, explores Welty's artistic commentary on her time and place and the way it unfolded as the United States became more socially aware. Future volumes in the series will address Welty's engagement with the mystery genre and Welty's multimedia influences. Congratulations to Christin Marie Taylor, whose beautiful book Labor Pains: New Deal Fictions of Race, Work, and Sex in the South<\/em><\/a> (UPM) is now out.\u00a0 One fourth of the book is on Eudora Welty.<\/p>\n

A fresh consideration of the impact of black radicalism on black characters in southern modernism<\/p>\n

From the 1930s to the 1960s, the Popular Front produced a significant era in African American literary radicalism. While scholars have long associated the black radicalism of the Popular Front with the literary left and the working class, Christin Marie Taylor considers how black radicalism influenced southern fiction about black workers, offering a new view of work and labor.<\/p>\n

At the height of the New Deal era and its legacies, Taylor examines how southern literature of the Popular Front not only addressed the familiar stakes of race and labor but also called upon an imagined black folk to explore questions of feeling and desire. By poring over tropes of black workers across genres of southern literature in the works of George Wylie Henderson, William Attaway, Eudora Welty, and Sarah Elizabeth Wright, Taylor reveals the broad reach of black radicalism into experiments with portraying human feelings.<\/p>\n

These writers grounded interrelationships and stoked emotions to present the social issues of their times in deeply human terms. Taylor emphasizes the multidimensional use of the sensual and the sexual, which many protest writers of the period, such as Richard Wright, avoided. She suggests Henderson and company used feeling to touch readers while also questioning and reimagining the political contexts and apparent victories of their times. In effect, these writers, some who are not considered a part of an African American protest tradition, illuminated an alternative form of protest through poignant paradigms.<\/p>\n

CHRISTIN MARIE TAYLOR is assistant professor of English at Shenandoah University. Taylor's work has appeared in Southern Quarterly, Southern Cultures, American Literature in Transition: 1960-1970, and the Encyclopedia of Hip Hop Literature as well as Teaching the Works of Eudora Welty: Twenty-First-Century Approaches, published by University Press of Mississippi.<\/p>\n
